Getting to know The Entrance from a Locals Perspective

By 3.15 on a Saturday afternoon, the benches around Pelican Plaza are already filling up. Regulars know to get there early. Everyone else works this out the first time they arrive at 3.32 and end up six rows back, craning over someone's esky to see anything at all. Pelican Time, the free volunteer talk and feed that runs most weekends and every day of the school holidays, is as good a way as any to understand what The Entrance actually is: a small, water-bound town that has been showing visitors a good time since well before anyone thought to build a website about it.

The Entrance sits on a narrow peninsula about 107 kilometres north of Sydney, a drive of roughly 90 minutes outside peak traffic, hemmed in by Tuggerah Lake on one side and the Tasman Sea on the other. The town takes its name from the channel that connects the two, the only point where the lake system meets the open water. Guest houses have operated here since 1885, and once the Sydney to Newcastle railway opened a few years later, Sydney families found their way up for the summer and largely kept coming back. That history still shapes the place today. The Entrance was never built as a resort. It is a genuine seaside community of a little over 4,000 residents that happens to have spent close to a century and a half getting good at holidays.

Finding Your Bearings

The layout trips up first-time visitors more than it should, mostly because a map doesn't show how close everything actually sits on foot. The town centre, with its cafes, the Coles at Lakeside Plaza and the waterfront strip along Memorial Drive, sits on the southern side of the channel. Cross the bridge and you're in The Entrance North, a quieter residential pocket with its own beach and far less foot traffic. Head south instead and the peninsula continues through Long Jetty, known for its strip of retro shopfronts and lakeside cafes, then on to Blue Bay and Toowoon Bay, both smaller surf beaches favoured by people who want the coast without the crowd. Tumbi Umbi sits just inland, more suburban than beachside, and suits anyone who wants easy access to the M1 without paying waterfront prices.

Driving is the easiest way in, but it isn't the only way. The closest train stations are Tuggerah and Wyong on the Central Coast and Newcastle Line, both roughly 20 minutes away by local bus. For anyone staying without a car, the town centre, the waterfront and Long Jetty are all close enough together to manage entirely on foot once you've arrived.

The Waterfront Everyone Ends Up At

Memorial Park is the obvious starting point, and there's no point pretending otherwise. This is where Pelican Time happens at Pelican Plaza, run by volunteers from Marine Wildlife Rescue Central Coast on most weekends, on public holidays, and every day through the NSW school holidays. It's also where the historic carousel still turns, recognised by the National Trust as one of the oldest in the country and still operated by the same family that has run it for generations. Vera's Water Garden, a free splash park beside the park, is where most families with young children end up losing an hour without quite meaning to.

From the park, a boardwalk follows the channel east towards the Grant McBride Ocean Baths and the surf club, a heritage-listed rock pool that's calmer than the open beach and a better bet for anyone swimming with small children.

Worth Knowing

The car park nearest Memorial Park fills by mid-morning on any summer weekend or school holiday day. Duffys Lane, a five-minute walk back from the water, is the car park most visitors never think to check, and it usually still has space when the foreshore has none.

Crossing the Bridge to The Entrance North

The Entrance North feels like a different town, even though it's only a couple of minutes' drive from the waterfront crowds. The main beach here has a designated off-leash area for dogs at its northern end, near Matron Simpson Reserve, one of the better nearby options for anyone travelling with a dog who wants more room than a lead allows. It's also a good stretch for a long beach walk without dodging pelican watchers, running north as a wide sand spit that's easy to pick out from Memorial Park across the channel.

South Along the Peninsula

Long Jetty, immediately south of The Entrance, has built its own identity around a strip of independent shopfronts selling everything from vintage furniture to local art, spaced out along a stretch that's genuinely worth wandering rather than just driving past. A shared lakeside path connects Long Jetty back to Picnic Point at The Entrance, which makes an early walk or ride followed by coffee an easy morning to put together without planning much.

Further south again, Blue Bay and Toowoon Bay are ocean beaches rather than lake beaches, both smaller and considerably quieter than the main Entrance foreshore. Couples and anyone after a straightforward beach day without the school holiday crowd tend to gravitate here. The full Coast to Lake Walk, a signposted 7.6 kilometre trail linking Long Jetty to Toowoon Bay, is the clearest way to see how the lake and ocean sides of the peninsula actually connect, and it's flat enough for most fitness levels.

On the Water

Tuggerah Lake is the main reason many people stay longer than a weekend. The Entrance Boat Shed hires rods and small motor boats for anyone wanting to fish the channel, and the main bridge, along with the smaller bridge at Terilbah Reserve, are both reliable spots for a line without a boat.

Worth Knowing

When prawns are running in the channel, usually through the warmer months, locals wade the shallows at night with a net, a torch and an esky. It's worth asking at the Boat Shed what's biting and where before heading out, since the best spots shift through the season and aren't always obvious from the bank.

For a calmer pace, the Tuggerah Lakes Cycleway runs the length of the peninsula and can be picked up on a hired bike from Boomerang Bike Hire near the Visitor Information Centre, close to the pelican boardwalk.

When to Visit

Summer and the school holidays are when The Entrance is at its busiest, and for many visitors, at its best. Pelican Time runs daily rather than just on weekends, Vera's Water Garden is at its most useful, and the ocean baths are the obvious escape from the heat. It's also when parking, cafes and the foreshore itself are stretched to capacity, so anyone visiting over January or the April and July school holidays should expect to share the place.

Autumn and winter suit a different kind of visit. The crowds thin out, the Coast to Lake Walk is a far more comfortable temperature to actually walk, and whale watching season, roughly May to November, brings migrating humpbacks close enough to spot from the headlands around Toowoon Bay and Blue Bay. Chromefest, the annual hot rod and rockabilly festival, draws a specific and enthusiastic crowd to the foreshore each year. It's worth checking dates for, whether the plan is to join in or to time a visit around it.

What Type of Visitors does The Entrance Suit

Families with young children are well looked after here. Vera's Water Garden, the calm ocean baths and the flat, shared paths make it one of the more manageable Central Coast destinations to navigate with kids in tow, and Pelican Time gives every afternoon a free activity that needs no planning.

Couples after something quieter tend to do better a little further south, around Blue Bay or Toowoon Bay, where the beaches are smaller and the pace slower, while still being a short drive from The Entrance foreshore for dinner or an evening wander.

Dog owners have a genuine option here too, particularly the off-leash stretch at The Entrance North Beach, though the main foreshore and patrolled swimming areas are on-leash or dog-free. It pays to check the signage at each beach rather than assume.

For Sydney weekend escapees, the drive time makes The Entrance one of the more realistic two-night options on the Central Coast, especially with a lake activity on the Saturday and a slower beach morning on the Sunday before heading home.
